about the author

Phil Powrie is Professor of French Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Research into Film and Media at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has published widely on French film, notably French Cinema in the 1980s: Nostalgia and the Crisis of Masculinity (1997), Contemporary French Cinema: Continuity and Difference (1999) and French Cinema: A Student’s Guide (2002).

Ann Davies is Lecturer in Spanish at the University of Newcastle. She is the author of Don Juan and Changing Gender Relations (2002) as well as various articles on Spanish cinema and the Carmen story.

Bruce Babington is Professor of Film in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He is co-author of Blue Skies and Silver Linings: Aspects of the Hollywood Musical (1985), Affairs to Remember: The Hollywood Comedy of the Sexes (1989) and Biblical Epics (1993). Other publications include British Stars and Stardom (2001) and Launder and Gilliat (2002).
